5-Day Zakynthos Road Trip – The Ultimate Island Itinerary

Five days, spectacular beaches, traditional villages, unforgettable viewpoints and some of the most beautiful roads in Zakynthos.

18 August 2026

Five days is the perfect amount of time to explore Zakynthos by car — enough to visit the beaches of Vasilikos, the dramatic south-western cliffs, the wild west coast, the northern peninsula, and still leave a final day for whatever you enjoyed most. The routes below are inspiration, not a strict schedule. Adjust the number of stops, the time spent at each place, and the order of days to suit your own pace, the weather, and your interests.

5 Days at a Glance

Here is a quick overview of the itinerary. Click any day to jump to its full section.

Day 1: Zakynthos Town & Vasilikos

The first day is about easing into the island. Start with a morning visit to Zakynthos Town — the waterfront, the harbour, and the central squares. Spend an hour or two exploring, have a coffee, and get your bearings. Then drive south-east toward the Vasilikos peninsula, where a string of beaches lines the coast. Banana Beach is the most popular, with sunbeds and a beach bar; Porto Roma is quieter; Agios Nikolaos, at the northern end, has a small harbour and waterside tavernas. Finish the day at Gerakas Beach, at the southern tip — a beautiful, unspoiled sandy beach and one of the most important nesting sites for the Caretta caretta sea turtle. Because Gerakas is a protected beach, access conditions and visitor guidelines may vary seasonally — always follow the current signs and official guidance.

Day 2: Keri, Mizithres & Southern Zakynthos

Drive south-west toward Keri, a traditional village on the south-western tip of the island. Stop at the Mizithres viewpoint — two white rock stacks rising from the sea below the cliffs — for one of the most spectacular views in Zakynthos. Continue to Limni Keriou, the small harbour at the base of the cliffs, where boat trips depart to Marathonisi (Turtle Island), a small uninhabited island in Laganas Bay. Marathonisi can only be reached by boat — a car gets you to the departure point at Keri. The Keri area is also one of the best places on the island for sunset, so return to the Mizithres viewpoint or find a spot along the coast for the evening light over the Ionian Sea.

Day 3: Western Zakynthos & Porto Limnionas

The third day is about the wild west coast — the most dramatic and least developed part of the island. Drive west through the inland countryside, where the roads wind through olive groves and traditional villages. Stop at Porto Limnionas, a stunning rocky inlet on the west coast. This is not a sandy beach — it is a natural rocky cove with deep, crystal-clear water and natural rock platforms for swimming and sunbathing. Bring snorkelling gear if you have it. After swimming, continue exploring the western coastline, sticking to paved roads. The west coast faces directly into the setting sun, so find a west-facing spot for sunset if the timing works.

Day 4: Northern Zakynthos – Xigia, Blue Caves & Navagio Area

Day 4 is the big northern day. Start early with a morning swim at Xigia Beach, a small pebble cove fed by natural sulphur springs on the north-east coast — the water is deep, clear, and turquoise, unlike anywhere else on the island. Then drive north along the coastline toward Cape Skinari and the Blue Caves area, a network of sea caves at the northern tip where the water glows an intense blue inside the caverns. The caves are primarily experienced by boat. Continue to the village of Volimes in the mountainous north for a taste of traditional Zakynthos — stone houses and a famous weekly market — then drive to the Navagio viewpoint area for the iconic view of Shipwreck Beach below. Access conditions around Navagio may change due to official safety measures, so check current information before travelling. The beach itself is accessible by boat, while the clifftop viewpoint is reachable by road.

Day 5: Flexible Zakynthos Day

The final day is deliberately flexible. Rather than prescribing a single route, here are three options depending on what you enjoyed most. Choose one, or mix and match — the point is to end your trip with the experience you liked best.

Option A: Return to a Favourite Beach or Area

Return to the beach or area you enjoyed most and spend a full day there — whether that was Gerakas, Xigia, Banana Beach, Porto Limnionas, or a whole region such as Vasilikos, the west coast, or the north. See our Best Beaches in Zakynthos guide for a reminder of all the options.

Option B: Traditional Villages & Local Zakynthos

Spend the day exploring the inland villages — Volimes, Keri Village, Anafonitria, and the countryside between them. This is the slow, authentic side of Zakynthos, with olive groves, stone houses, and tavernas serving local food.

Option C: Relaxed Southern Coast & Boat Trip

Explore the southern coast — Kalamaki, Agios Sostis, and the Laganas Bay area, with long sandy beaches close to Zakynthos Town. Several are within the Marine Park area, so follow any nesting-zone signs. Alternatively, combine a boat experience — a trip to Marathonisi, the Blue Caves, or the Navagio sea area when permitted — with a relaxed afternoon drive, to see the island from two different perspectives.

Practical Tips for Your Zakynthos Road Trip

Zakynthos is compact enough that you can reach any destination in under an hour from anywhere, so your base does not need to be in one specific area. Zakynthos Town is central and convenient for restaurants and the ferry; Kalamaki and Laganas are close to town and the southern beaches; Tsilivi is a family-friendly resort on the east coast; Argassi is close to town and convenient for Vasilikos; Vasilikos itself is quieter and more rural. Choose the area that suits your style — the itinerary works from any starting point.

All the destinations in this itinerary are reachable on paved roads suitable for a standard rental car — you do not need a specific vehicle type. Couples or light travellers will be comfortable in a small or medium car; an automatic is the easiest option if you prefer not to change gears; an SUV gives a higher driving position; families or larger groups may need a 7-seater. Always follow your rental agreement and avoid roads or areas where vehicle access is prohibited or unsuitable.

  • •Plenty of water, especially for the west coast and northern days
  • •Sunscreen and a hat — the Zakynthos sun is strong from May to October
  • •Swimwear and a towel
  • •Comfortable footwear for walking to viewpoints and coves
  • •Phone and car charger for navigation
  • •Snorkelling gear for the rocky coves
  • •Beach umbrella for beaches without sunbeds

Several destinations on this itinerary are within or near protected natural areas, particularly the turtle nesting beaches of Laganas Bay and Vasilikos. Respect protected areas and follow all signs, avoid disturbing wildlife, do not touch nests or cordoned-off zones, park only where permitted, avoid prohibited or unsuitable roads, keep beaches clean, and follow current official guidance at all times.
